WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Freshman Carly Burkhardt (+1) and Taylor Totland (+1) each carded a 73 to tie for 19th and lead the second-ranked Furman women's golf team Friday at the 15th annual Landfall Tradition at the par 72, 6,166 yard Pete Dye Course at The Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
Burkhardt, a Greenville native, birdied No. 5 and No. 6, while Totland, who hails from Tinton Falls, N.J., added birdies on No. 1 and No. 4. The Paladin duo finished the opening round four strokes back of individual leader Hannah Wood (-3) of Oklahoma, who fired a 69 to lead the field on Friday.
Sophomore Haylee Harford (+3), freshman Natalie Srinivasan (+3), and junior Alice Chen (+3) are all tied for 37th after posting a 75 on Friday. Harford recorded back-to-back birdies on No. 11 and No. 12, and Srinivasan birdied No. 8 and No. 14. Chen also scored two birdies on No. 3 and No. 16.
The Paladins (+8) enter Saturday's second round tied for sixth with No. 36 N.C. State. No. 24 Oklahoma (-4) leads the field, while 13th-ranked Wake Forest (E) is four strokes back in second place. Twelfth-ranked Purdue (+3) is third, and No. 1 Alabama (+5) and No. 17 UCF (+5) are tied for fourth.
The 54-hole tournament will continue Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude on Sunday with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start. On Saturday, Furman will tee off of No. 1 at 9:15 and will play in a group with UCF and Alabama. Admission to the tournament is free and fans are welcome.
