LUBBOCK, Texas -- The tenth-ranked Furman (+7) women's golf team recorded 11 birdies on the back nine, including five in the last three holes, to surge into a tie for third place Tuesday in the second round of the NCAA Lubbock Regional at the par-72, 6,593 yard The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas.

Sophomore Haylee Harford (-3), who ranks 37th nationally, fired a 69 with a team-high five birdies to finish the round in a tie for second, just two strokes back of Arizona State's Monica Vaughn (-5), who leads the field after shooting a 71 in the opening round and adding a 68 on Tuesday.  Freshman Natalie Srinivasan (E) carded a 70 with four birdies on Tuesday to tie for tenth heading into Wednesday's final round.

Junior Alice Chen (+4) scored back-to-back birdies on No. 12 and No. 13 for a 73 in round two, tying for 22nd, while senior Taylor Totland (+6) rebounded with a 71 on Tuesday.  Totland notched three birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 17 and No. 18 to end the round, to tie for 36th.  Freshman Carly Burkhardt (+11) is tied for 64th after posting a 75 with birdies on No. 10 and No. 17.

Seventh-ranked Arizona State (-6) held a one-stroke lead heading into Tuesday's round but pulled away from the field after shooting 11-under on the day.  Host Texas Tech (+6), which ranks 34th nationally, is in second, while No. 47 Oregon (+7) is tied for third with the Paladins.  No. 18 Texas (+13) completes the top five, and 15th-ranked Kent State (+16) and No. 2 UCLA (+16) are tied for sixth.

The Paladins, who will tee off of No. 1 beginning at 9 a.m. in Wednesday's final round, are part of an 18-team regional field that is battling for a top six finish and a berth in the 24-team NCAA Championship which will be held May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The Lubbock Regional field includes six of the top 25 teams in the country, led by second-ranked UCLA, No. 7 Arizona State, tenth-ranked Furman, No. 15 Kent State, 18th-ranked Texas, and 23rd-ranked Oklahoma.

Furman, which secured the Southern Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by capturing its 16th SoCon Championship last month at the Country Club of Lexington in Lexington, S.C., is making its third-consecutive and 20th overall NCAA Regional appearance.  The Paladins appeared in 17-straight regionals from 1993, when the regional format began, until 2010.  Furman finished fourth last season at the NCAA Bryan Regional in Bryan, Texas, and went on to place 20th at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
