HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Defending Southern Conference champion Furman (+13) holds the team lead following Sunday's first round of play under turbulent conditions at the Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship at the par-72, 6,105 yard Moss Creek Golf Club's South Course on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Seeking their 17th title, the eighth-ranked Paladins hold a six-stroke lead over Mercer (+19). Chattanooga (+20) is one stroke behind the Bears in third, followed by Samford (+31) in fourth, and ETSU (+35) in fifth place.
Furman has four players among the top six, including sophomore Natalie Srinivasan (+2), who recorded four birdies, including consecutive birdies on the first two holes, to sit alone in second place after scoring a 74 in Sunday's opening round. Srinivasan is one stroke back of Mercer's Payton Schanen (+1), who led the field with a 73 in the first round.
Seniors Reona Hirai (+3) and Jacqueline Bendrick (+3) are tied for third after each tallied a 75 in round one. Hirai notched four birdies, including three birdies in four holes from No. 4 through No. 7, and Bendrick added three birdies.
Senior Alice Chen (+5) enters Monday's round in a tie for sixth after scoring a 77 with birdies on No. 8 and No. 12, and junior Haylee Harford (+8) carded an 80 with a birdie on No. 11 to tie for 19th.
Second round action of the 54-hole tournament is slated for 8 a.m. on Monday, with the final round scheduled for Tuesday. The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. On Monday, the Paladins will tee off of No. 1 beginning at 9:40 a.m. and play in a group with Mercer and Chattanooga.
