Strong First Half Powers Davidson Past Furman

Greenville, S.C. – Behind a 10-4 first-half lead, Davidson downed Furman, 18-8, on Sunday afternoon in Paladin Stadium. The win moves the Wildcats to 1-0 on the year, while the loss drops the Paladins to 1-2.

Meg Lingo led the Paladins on offense with four goals and an assist for five points, while Sophie Brennan added three goals. Maggie Friel played all 60:00 in goal for the Paladins, making 14 saves.

Davidson opened the game with four-straight goals before Lingo netted her first of the day, with 17:12 remaining to stop the Wildcat run. Davidson responded with three-straight goals to push the lead to 7-1, before Furman got back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 7-3. The Wildcats again responded with three-straight goals to push the lead to 10-3, before Lingo completed her first-half hat trick with just four seconds left to send the teams to the locker rooms with Davidson holding a 10-4 lead.

Furman opened the second half on a 3-1 run to cut the lead to 11-7, before Davidson used a 5-1 run to push the lead to 16-8 with just under 8:00 remaining, forcing a Furman timeout. The Paladins couldn't close the gap, however, as the Wildcats scored two more goals to take the 18-8 win.

The Wildcats had four players score three goals, while Christine Molinari added three assists for a game-high six points.

Furman is back in action on February 24, traveling to Nashville, Tenn., to take on Vanderbilt.
