Buies Creek, N.C. – Furman tied the game with under a minute to go, but Melissa Placek scored with two seconds remaining to hand the Paladins a heartbreaking 13-12 loss on Friday evening. The win moves the Camels to 4-6 on the year, while the loss drops Furman to 1-7.
Abby Shields led the Paladins with a season-high five goals and added two assists for seven points, while Isabelle Walsh and Hannah Feinberg each added two goals. Maggie Friel played all 60 minutes in goal, making 14 saves on the day.
Campbell opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game, before the Paladins responded with three-straight goals to take a 3-1 lead. The Camels then used four-consecutive scores to regain the lead at 5-3, before Abby Shields cut the lead to one at 5-4 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half. Campbell pushed the lead to 6-4, before Shields completed the first-half hat trick on an assist from Sophie Brennan to send the teams into halftime with the Paladins trailing 6-5.
Campbell pushed the lead to 8-5 to open the second half, before the Paladins used three-straight goals, including two from Shields, to tie the game at eight with just over 23:00 remaining. The teams then traded scores until Campbell used back-to-back goals in a 15 second span to take a 12-10 lead with just over 10:00 to go. Sophie Brennan cut the lead to one on a free position shot, before Isabelle Walsh tied the game at 12 with 43 seconds to go. The Camels won the ensuing draw and, following a timeout, netted the game-winner with just two seconds on the clock for the 13-12 victory.
Melissa Placek and Mackenzie Koeller led the Camels with three goals each, while Kyla Reilly added three assists and Sydney Etheridge made 13 saves.
The Paladins are back in action next weekend, playing host to Jacksonville and Stetson on March 29 and 31, respectively, inside Paladin Stadium.
