Deland, Fla. – Behind seven points from Grace Pollak (five goals, two assists) and five from Abby Shields (four goals, one assist) Furman held off a second-half rally from Stetson, downing the Hatters 15-13 in Deland, Fla., on Friday. The win moves the Paladins to 4-5 on the year, while the loss drops the Hatters to 0-8.
Pollak and Shields led the Paladins, while Isabelle Walsh and Hannah Demis each added two goals. Sophie Brennan added a goal and two assists, while winning a team-high six draws. Courtney Baker got the win in goal, making 12 saves on the afternoon.
The teams traded goals to open the game, until Furman used a 5-0 scoring run to take a 7-2 lead with 19:30 left in the half. The two teams again traded scores until Stetson used three-straight goals to cut the Furman lead to 9-7 and force the Paladins to take a timeout with just under 5:00 to go in the first. Out of the timeout, Furman closed out the half with three-consecutive scores to take a 12-7 lead into halftime
Stetson opened the second half on a 4-0 scoring run to cut the Furman lead to one with 18:00 left in the game. Following a Furman timeout, the Hatters pushed the scoring run to 5-0, tying the game at 12 with 17:00 to go. Abby Shields finally ended the Stetson run, putting the Paladins back on top at 13-12 with just under 16:00 remaining for her fourth goal of the afternoon. The Paladins pushed the lead back to two on a goal by Hannah Demis with just over 10:00 to go, then to three on a goal by Grace Pollak with 7:45 remaining. The Paladins held off a furious rally to close out the game, with Courtney Baker making back-to-back saves in the game's final 30 seconds to give Furman the 15-13 victory.
Furman is back in action on Sunday, taking on Jacksonville in a 1:00 p.m. contest in Jacksonville, Fla.
