Spartanburg, S.C. – Behind seven points each from Hannah Demis and Abby Shields, Furman women's lacrosse downed Wofford, 18-5, on Saturday afternoon in the 2019 regular season finale. The win ends Furman's regular season at 10-7, 4-1 SoCon, and gives the Paladins a share of the 2019 Southern Conference regular season championship.
Furman was led by Abby Shields with five goals and two assists, while Grace Pollak also added five goals. Hannah Demis turned in a school single-game record seven assists, while five other Paladins scored. Sydney Catts and Lauren Farber each won a team-high three draws, while Catts added two ground balls.
Furman jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first 12:00 of the game, before Wofford ended the run and cut the lead to 9-1 with 7:41 to go in the half. The Paladins then closed the first half with three-straight goals to take a 12-1 lead into halftime.
Furman pushed the lead to 13-1 to open the second, before the Terriers used a 2-1 scoring advantage to cut the lead to 14-4 with 15:12 remaining. Furman then used four-straight scores to push the lead to 18-4, before Wofford ended the game with Ally Furnari's fourth goal of the day, giving the Paladins the 18-5 win.
Furman is back in action next week, as the Paladins serve as host for the 2019 Southern Conference Championship. Due to the league's tie-breaking procedures, Furman earned the No. 3 seed and will open the tournament against No. 2 seed Detroit Mercy on Thursday.
