Greenville, S.C. – The Furman women's soccer team was tabbed as the preseason favorite in the Southern Conference in voting by the league's 11 head coaches, and five Paladins were named to the preseason All-SoCon team, it was announced on Thursday by the league office.

The Paladins garnered five of the 11 first place votes and 94 total points to grab the top spot in the poll by one point.  Samford, with four first place votes and 93 total points, was picked second and UNCG received two first place votes to hold the third spot.  Davidson, Elon, Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, Western Carolina, The Citadel, Wofford and Chattanooga rounded out the preseason poll.

Sophomore Stephanie DeVita, the 2012 SoCon Player and Freshman of the Year, highlighted a group of five Paladins who were named to the 11-member preseason All-SoCon team.  Furman midfielders Caitlin Shelton and Hannah Stanifer were also named to the All-SoCon squad along with defender Ali Simpson and goalkeeper Rose Hull.

DeVita, a native of Simpsonville, S.C., led the SoCon in scoring and ranked as the nation's top scoring freshman with 19 goals last season.  Hannah Stanifer, who joined DeVita on the 2012 All-SoCon squad, tallied six goals and added four assists a year ago.

Shelton, a senior captain, netted four goals and totaled three assists in 2012 while helping Furman to a 16-3-3 record and a berth in the SoCon Tournament finals.  Junior Ali Simpson recorded two assists last season and anchored a Paladin defense that established a school record by allowing just 16 goals in 22 outings.

Sophomore Rose Hull was a key to the Paladins stellar defensive effort in 2012.  The Brentwood, Tenn., native posted a 0.62 goals against average and notched eight shutouts as a freshman to earn first team All-SoCon honors.

The Paladins open the 2013 campaign on Friday, August 23, when they host Presbyterian on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
