Pineville, N.C. -- The Furman Paladins and Elon Phoenix played to a scoreless draw in the preseason women's soccer opener for both schools on Tuesday evening at Ortho Sports Complex in Pineville, N.C.

"We are just a few days into preseason training, but it was good for us to face a tough opponent like Elon and see were we stand," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr, who earned Southern Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2017 after guiding Furman to a share of the SoCon regular season title. "It was a great chance for us to get a look at a lot of players and for our younger players to get a feel for what NCAA Division I soccer is all about."

The Paladins posted a shutout and did not allow a shot on goal in its preseason opener, while compiling an 8-6 edge in total shots and 3-0 advantage in shots on target.

Junior Caitlyn Reilly created Furman's first scoring opportunity in the 22nd minute by forcing Elon's goalkeeper into a save from 12 yards out. In the 35th minute, junior Allyn Wiggins got a head to a cross off a free kick to force another Elon save from the top of the six-yard box.

Junior Erin O'Hearn threatened the Phoenix defense twice over the final 45 minutes. In the 63rd minute, the Savannah, Ga., native had her sliding effort at the back post blocked by an Elon defender before rattling a shot off of the cross bar with just over eight minutes to play.

Furman continues its preseason on Saturday when it travels to Clemson, S.C., for an exhibition versus the Clemson Tigers at Historic Riggs Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Paladins open the regular season on August 18, when they entertain the Richmond Spiders at Stone Soccer Stadium.
