Emily Demonte pitched Furman to a 3-1 victory over Marshall in the Paladins' season opener on Friday afternoon.

Auburn, Ala. -- Junior Emily Demonte limited Marshall to an unearned run over five innings to earn her first victory of the season and senior Lindsey Bert tossed two perfect innings of relief to pick up the save as Furman topped the Thundering Herd, 3-1, in the Paladins' season opener on Friday afternoon at Auburn's Plainsmen Invitational.

Furman took the lead in the top of the second inning when AnnaRose Borrelli drew a leadoff walk and scored on a throwing error as Marshall attempted to start a double play with a force out at second, but saw the throw sail into the outfield. Caroline Cash reached on a bunt single to open the third, swiped second and later scored on Bert's line drive sacrifice fly to left field.

The Paladins pushed across an insurance run in the fifth inning when Borrelli worked a two-out walk after two walks and a Lauren Duggar single loaded the bases for Furman.

An error and sacrifice fly allowed Marshall to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth, but Demonte got a lineout to shortstop Brittany Houston to get out of further trouble. Demonte, a native of Sumter, S.C., fanned five batters and walked just one over five innings.

Bert entered the game in the bottom of the sixth and fanned four of the six batters she faced to shut the door on the Thundering Herd (0-2) and earn the save.

Duggar finished with a pair of singles and Borrelli reached base on a pair of walks, while Demonte added a double.

Kailee Williamson (0-1) took the loss for Marshall after allowing three runs on four hits over five innings of work. She fanned seven batters and walked four.

The Paladins (1-0) are slated to return to action at 5:30 p.m. ET when they face the host and 13th-ranked Auburn Tigers. The game will be streamed live on the SEC Network+ and the Watch ESPN app.
