Delaware State Halts Furman Softball Winning Streak, 5-3

Greenville, S.C. -- Delaware State jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held on to down Furman, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon to snap the Paladins 10-game winning streak.

Alexis Goldsby (1-4) limited the Paladins to a pair of earned runs on nine hits over seven innings to earn the victory, She finished with four strikeouts and issued two walks.

The Hornets (1-13) took the lead with two runs in the top of the second. Kaleigh Berry singles with one out and scored on a hit and run when Micaela Cummings lined a base hit to center field. Cummings raced home on Khaliyah Flournory's single to up the Hornets' lead to 2-0.

Flournory drew a walk in the fifth and scored on Desiree Moreno's double off the wall before Moreno tallied the fourth Delaware State run on a sacrifice fly from Vanessa Washington.

After stranding runners at third base twice, Furman broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Candace Johnson opened the frame with a triple and crossed the plate on Cammy Pereira's two-out, RBI single to right field. Lindsey Bert doubled to put runners at second and third, but Goldsby got a strikeout to end the threat.

After Delaware State added a run in the top of the seventh, Furman mounted another rally in its last at bat. Brittany Houston singled to open the inning and scored on Caroline Cash's one-out triple. Johnson struck out swinging, but pinch hitter Marissa Guimbarda reached on an error to keep the game alive and bring the tying run to the plate. AnnaRose Borrelli singled with two outs before Goldsby got Pereira to ground back to the circle to end the game.

Senior Lindsey Bert (9-3) took the loss for Furman, allowing five runs on four hits in seven innings. She walked three Hornets and recorded 11 strikeouts to move into second in school history with 646 career strikeouts.

The Paladins (16-4) return to action on Tuesday when they host Sacred Heart in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Pepsi Stadium. The game will be streamed live via the SoCon Digital Network with live statistics provided through StatBroadcast. Links for both can be found at FurmanPaladins.com.
