Greenville, S.C. – Nicole Newman belted two home runs and drove in seven runs to key Drake to an 11-3 victory over Furman in the Paladins' opening game at the Plainsman Invitational in Auburn, Ala. On Friday afternoon. The Paladins nightcap versus the host Tigers was rained out.
The Paladins (2-4) will return to action on Saturday with an 11 a.m. ET first pitch against UAB before playing Texas Tech at 1:30 p.m. ET.
Newman crushed a three-run blast to center field with one out in the first inning and the Bulldogs plated a pair of two-out runs in the second on a single by Mandi Roemmich and a Macy Johnson double.
With Drake (5-2) leading 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Newman came up with the bases loaded and cracked a grand slam to the opposite field. Furman's Emily DeMonte lined a two-run homer to left-center field to key a three-run fifth inning for the Paladins, but Roemmich triggered the mercy rule with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame to give the Bulldogs an 11-3 win.
Nicole Timmons (3-1) worked three innings to earn the victory for Drake, while DeMonte (2-2) allowed six runs over three innings to suffer the loss for Furman.
Roemmich went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Newman went 2-for-2 with two homers and a base on balls for Drake. Leadoff hitter Lauren Duggar went 1-for-2 with a single and a walk for the Paladins.
