Furman Drops Two At Plainsman Softball Invitational

Auburn, Ala. -- Missy Zoch and Megan Hornback combined on a two-hit shutout to lead Texas Tech to a 5-0 victory over Furman on Saturday afternoon at the Plainsman Invitational in Auburn, Ala. UAB downed the Paladins, 11-3, in the first game on Saturday.

Zoch fanned five batters while allowing just one hit and a walk over four innings before Hornback limited the Paladins to a hit and a walk over three innings to earn her first save of the season.

Breanna Russell homered to leadoff a two-run second inning for the Red Raiders (8-0) and Taylor Satchell upped the margin to 3-0 with an RBI double in the third inning. A bases loaded walk forced in the fourth run in the sixth inning and Satchell capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Emily DeMonte (2-4) suffered the loss for Furman (2-6) after giving up three runs on seven hits in three innings. The senior singled at the plate, while Casey Bigham added a double for the Paladins.

In the opening game of the day, UAB plated 11 runs on 16 hits and clubbed four home runs en route to an 11-4 victory over the Paladins.

Sierra Frazier homered down the left field line to stake the Blazers to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. After Cammy Pereira's two-out, two-run double to left-center evened the game in the bottom of the frame, Frazier delivered another two-run blast as part of a five-run fourth inning to give UAB a 7-2 lead.

Rachel Owens went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs and Frazier finished 2-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs to power the UAB offense. Bigham went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, triple and a base on balls to lead Furman.

Claire Blount, who also belted a home run for the Blazers, picked up the win in the circle to improve to 3-1. She surrendered four runs on seven hits in five and 1/3 innings of work while fanning six batters. DeMonte suffered the loss for the Paladins allowing seven runs on nine hits in three innings.
