Clearwater, Fla. -- Crista San Antonio drove in Vanessa Portillo with a two-out, two-strike base hit to right field in the top of the seventh and Megan McCune worked around a two-out single in the bottom of the innings as Providence topped Furman, 5-4, in the opening game on Friday at the USF-Clearwater Parks & Recreation Showcase.

The Friars took advantage of back-to-back doubles and a Paladin error to plate three first-inning runs. In the bottom of the third, Savannah Hughes doubled into the gap and scored when Lauren Duggar reached on a bunt single and the throw to first sailed wide. Cammy Pereira followed with a fly ball to deep right field that allowed Duggar to tag up and score on from second base to trim the margin to 3-2.

After Taylor Vahle tied the game with a solo blast to center field in the bottom of the fourth, the Paladins and Friars traded runs in the sixth inning. Mackense Greico came on in relief of Emily DeMonte in the top of the seventh and hit Portillo with her first pitch to setup SanAntonio's go-ahead hit. Duggar reached base for the Paladins and stole second with two outs in the bottom of the frame, but McCune retired Cammy Pereira to end the rally.

McCune (2-1) allowed just three earned runs on seven hits over seven innings to earn the win. She fanned five batters without allowing a walk. Six players registered at least one hit to power Providence's nine-hit attack.

Greico suffered the loss for Furman to drop to 0-6. DeMonte allowed just two earned runs on eight hits in six innings of work. Sophomore Marissa Guimbarda and Duggar collected two hits apiece for the Paladins.

After playing Central Connecticut State at 5 p.m. today, Furman (5-13) continues tournament play on Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. first pitch versus nationally-ranked Wisconsin before facing UCF at 5 p.m. Fans can follow live statistics through StatBroadcast at and can find in-game updates via Twitter by following @FurmanSoftball.
