Greenville, S.C. – The Furman softball team will play its long-awaited 2019 home opener on Wednesday when it welcomes the Atlantic Coast Conference's Virginia Cavaliers to Pepsi Stadium for a 7 p.m. first pitch.
Wednesday's game will be streamed live on the SoCon Digital Network with live statistics available through StatBroadcast. Links for both can be found at FurmanPaladins.com. Admission to every Paladin home contest at Pepsi Stadium is free.
Furman (7-15) will be in search of its third straight victory after capping a 22-game, season-opening road trip with wins over UCF and nationally-ranked Indiana this past weekend at the USF-Clearwater Parks & Recreation Showcase in Clearwater, Fla. On Saturday, senior Emily DeMonte clubbed a three-run homer and tossed a complete game to lead Furman to a 3-2 win over the Golden Knights. Less than 24 hours later, freshman Mackense Greico hurled her first complete game and picked up her first career victory in the circle as the Paladins topped the 14th-ranked Hoosiers, 5-1.
DeMonte has led the Furman pitching staff by going 6-8 with a 4.79 ERA on the season, but has been outstanding in her last 10 outings, fashioning a 4-2 record and 2.69 ERA. Sophomore designated player Marissa Guimbarda has hit .377 with eight homers and 22 RBIs to lead the Paladin offense. She has batted .462 with seven homers and 14 RBIs in her last 39 at-bats.
Wednesday's game marks the ninth all-time meeting between Furman and UVA with the series knotted at 4-4. The Cavaliers claimed a 9-1 victory over the Paladins in the last meeting during the 2016 season at Pepsi Stadium.
Virginia sports an 11-9 record entering its Tuesday afternoon tilt at Charlotte and is 3-0 in the ACC following a sweep of the Pitt Panthers this past weekend.
Furman will be idle this coming weekend before hosting Georgia Tech on Wednesday, March 20, at Pepsi Stadium.
