Virginia Spoils Furman Softball’s Home Opener, 10-1

Greenville, S.C. -- Lacy Smith went 3-for-3 with a double and a homer to send Virginia past Furman, 10-1, in the home opener for the Paladins on Wednesday night at Pepsi Stadium.

Smith doubled and scored on Olivia Gott's double to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and lined a two-run homer to left field in a four-run top of the third to help UVA to a 5-0 lead.

Furman's Sarah Windham doubled over the rightfielder's head and scored on Cammy Pereira's triple into the gap to get the Paladins on the board in the bottom of the third, but Virginia answered with a pair of sacrifice flies the following inning, In the fifth, Ashlee Davis delivered a two-run double off of the third base bag to drive in two more runs and the Cavaliers (13-9) plated three to extend its lead to 10-1.

Aly Rayle (5-1) picked up the win for UVA allowing just a run on four hits over four innings. She walked one batter and fanned four. Emily DeMonte (6-9) took the loss for the Paladins after surrendering five runs on five hits in three innings.

Pereira paced the Paladins with two hits and an RBI, while Windham went 1-for-1 with a double and a base on balls.
