  • Furman Women Win SoCon All-Sports Race; Paladin Men Take Second

    The Furman women’s athletic programs have won the race for the Southern Conference’s all-sport trophy, while the Paladin men took second place, the highest cumulative finish in the history of the Paladin athletic programs. The Germann Cup and Commissioner’s Cup are awarded annually to the Southern Conference schools fielding the league’s best all-around women’s and men’s sports programs, respectively.

    Top-ranked Furman, the SoCon regular season champions, advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Conference Championship Friday with a 4-0 win over Western Carolina at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Paladins (15-8, 7-0 SoCon) will square off against No. 4 Samford Saturday at 2 p.m. in the semifinals, with the winner advancing to Sunday’s championship match.

    Furman’s Ansley Speaks has been named the 2016 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year, while Paladin head coach Adam Herendeen was named the league’s Coach of the Year, and Furman’s Katarina Weymouth was tabbed the Freshman of the Year, as announced today by the league office. Postseason balloting was conducted by the league’s head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.

    Freshman Katarina Weymouth outlasted Regina Nychytailova, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, at flight two singles Saturday to help Furman to a 4-3 victory over ETSU at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex in Johnson City, Tenn. With the win, the Paladins captured the Southern Conference regular season championship, Furman’s 18th overall and first since 2014.
