    Furman captured its second straight Germann Cup and finished second in the Commissioner’s Cup standings for a second consecutive year, it was announced on Tuesday by the Southern Conference at its annual league meetings in Hilton Head, S.C. The Germann Cup and Commissioner’s Cup are awarded annually to the Southern Conference schools fielding the league’s best all-around women’s and men’s sports programs, respectively.

The Paladins, who boast a 15 match winning streak and have won 17 of their last 18 matches, entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and advance to the championship match where they will face No. 2 ETSU Sunday at 1 p.m. Furman is seeking its 17th SoCon tournament title and its first since 2008.

Postseason balloting was conducted by the league’s head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.

    Furman’s Ansley Speaks has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played March 20-26. Speaks, who earned the award for the third time this season, went 6-0 in all competition last week as the Paladins picked up three wins, including conference victories over Wofford (6-1) and UNCG (7-0). The Paladins also scored a 6-1 win over Charlotte last week.

The Paladin trio combined for three singles wins and two doubles victories on Sunday to push their record over the past four seasons to 57-34 overall and 23-3 in SoCon play.
