GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman's Madison Dillon has been named the Southern Conference women's tennis player of the week for all matches played March 5-11, the conference office announced Tuesday. Dillon, a freshman, went 3-0 in both singles and doubles on the week as Furman (14-1), beat Florida Gulf Coast, Valparaiso and Iowa.
Dillon moved into the ITA ranking this week, coming in at No. 123 nationally. She is the fourth different Furman player to earn the weekly award.
In singles, Dillon won all three matches in straight sets. On March 6, Dillon downed Patricia Villar of Florida Gulf Coast 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5. Later that afternoon, she played in the No. 1 spot, picking up a 6-1, 6-0 win against Valparaiso's Claire Czerwonka. The native of Hilton Head, South Carolina, ended the week with a 6-2, 0-6, 6-1 win over Iowa's Michelle Bacalla at No. 5 and clinched the 5-2 win for the Paladins.
In doubles play, Dillon and her partner, Katty Weymouth, earned a 6-2 win over Florida Gulf Coast's duo at flight No. 2. She played No. 1 in the next match and added a 6-2 win over Valparaiso's top pair. Against Iowa, she won 6-3 at No. 2 to earn her 14th win of the season and seventh straight.
Furman returns to the court on March 13, hosting UNCG in a conference matchup.
