No. 40 Furman Sweeps Wofford To Maintain Firm Hold On Pinson Cup

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- No. 40 Furman swept Wofford, 7-0, Saturday at the Reeves Tennis Center in Spartanburg, S.C.  With the win, Furman extends its winning streak to 17 matches and improves to 20-1 overall and 4-0 in the Southern Conference.  The Terriers fall to 10-6 overall and 2-2 in league play with the loss.

With the victory over the Terriers, the Paladins maintained possession of the Pinson Cup.  Bobby and Dixie Pinson, beloved friends of both the Furman and Wofford programs, have given the trophy and a generous donation in honor of the rivalry between the two schools.  The trophy stays with the winning school until the winner of the next season's match is determined, and the Paladins have been awarded the trophy each year since its inception in 2005.

The Paladins won two out of three doubles matches to take the opening point.  Freshman Madison Dillon and senior Katty Weymouth downed Lilie Steryous and Liz Massie, 6-1, at flight two, and sophomores Carol Elizabeth Kerman and Georgie Walker defeated Kay Kluska and Brittney Wilburt, 6-2, at number three.  In the flight one match up, Wofford's Cassidy Hicks and Jenna Vroman handed 40th-ranked junior Katarina Kozarov and rookie Julia Adams a 6-3 loss.

Furman swept the singles matches, five in straight sets.  In the number one contest, Kozarov, who ranks 88th nationally, beat Vroman, 6-4, 6-0, and Weymouth outlasted Hicks, 5-6, 6-4, 1-0(10-3) at flight two.  Adams topped Steryous, 6-2, 6-3, at flight three, and Dillon recorded a 6-2, 6-1 advantage over Kluska at number four.  Kerman posted a 6-4, 6-0 win versus Wilbur in the flight five contest, and at flight six, Walker outlasted Curran Carver, 7-5, 6-1.

The Paladins (20-1, 4-0 SoCon) hit the road for two matches next weekend.  Furman will play at Samford on April 5. at 2:30 p.m. then travel to Chattanooga on April 7 for an 11 a.m. contest.
