No. 50 Furman Advances To SoCon Finals With 4-0 Victory Over Samford

MACON, Ga. -- No. 50 Furman defeated Samford, 4-0, in the Southern Conference women's tennis semifinals Friday at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center in Macon, Ga.  The top-seeded Paladins, who are making their third-straight appearance in the league championship match, will square off against No. 2 ETSU Saturday at 1 p.m., with the victor earning the SoCon's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

With the semifinal win over the Bulldogs, the Paladins (25-1, 7-0 SoCon), who on Thursday broke the program record for most wins in a season at 24, extended their winning streak to 22 matches, the longest winning streak in Furman women's tennis history.  Samford concludes the season at 13-11.

Furman scored wins in the top two doubles matches to earn the opening point.  Junior Katarina Kozarov, the 2019 SoCon Player of the year, teamed with rookie Julia Adams, the 2019 SoCon Freshman of the Year, for a 6-3 advantage over Elsa Pool and Holly Horsfall at flight one, and freshman Madison Dillon and senior Katty Weymouth beat Grace Jennings and Mary Kathrine Lewis, 6-3, at number two.  The flight three match was unfinished, with sophomores Carol Elizabeth Kerman and Georgie Walker tied at 4-all with Arianna Beltrame and Natalia De Ugarte.

In singles action, the Paladins won three matches in straight sets to complete the sweep.  Kozarov, who ranks 78th nationally, topped Jennings, 7-5, 6-1, in the top-seeded contest, and Adams downed De Ugarte, 6-3, 6-0, at flight three.  At number four, Dillon held off Beltrame, 6-3, 6-0.

The remaining three matches were unfinished.  At flight two, Weymouth won set on3, 6-4, over Pool, but Pool held a 4-2 advantage in the second set.  Kerman led Horsfall, 6-3, 3-1, at number five, and at flight six, Lewis took set one, 6-2, over Walker, but the duo was tied at 3-apiece in the second set.
