Furman (9-9) evened its record on Sunday with an 8-2 victory over USC Upstate at Fluor Field, capping a successful weekend that saw the Paladins also trim Michigan State, 11-9.

A trio of freshmen — Brandon Elmy (3x4, two doubles, 2 RBI), Blake Chisolm (2x5, RBI), and Landon Kay (1x4, 2-run HR) — combined for six hits and five RBI to key the Paladins to the win over Upstate, which also featured strong pitching by senior left-hander Ryan Morse, who allowed only a run on four hits while striking out six over six innings.

Gardner-Webb (12-8) opened Big South Conference Tournament play over the weekend by taking two of three at Presbyterian.

Furman is expected to start freshman left-hander Grant Schuermann (0-0, 10.80 ERA).

Furman beat Gardner-Webb, 9-0, a year ago in Boling Springs and leads the all-time series, 24-12.

The Paladins open Southern Conference play with a three-game series at Samford begining on Friday.
