Paladin Women Win Gene Mullin Furman Invitational; Men Finish Second Behind VMI

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's team won the 39th Gene Mullin Furman Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning in Greenville, S.C., while the Paladin men's team finished second behind VMI.  The women's team scored 23 points in the field of 11 teams, and the men's team scored 72 points in the field of 12 teams. 

The Paladin women swept places two through five and had five of the top ten finishers on the 5K course.  Senior Erin Barker led the Furman women's team for the fourth-consecutive meet, taking second place with a time of 18:38.  Senior Chloe Kowalski finished third with a time of 18:46, while fellow senior Brooke Mosteller placed fourth with a time of 18:48.  Freshman Sinead Haughey rounded out the top five, turning in a time of 19:03.  Sophomore Kacie Schoen finished ninth in the meet with a time of 19:25 to compete the Paladin scoring slate.

Senior Lee Gilmer placed fifth with a time of 26:53 to lead the Furman men's team on the 8K course.  Senior Chris Caldwell took sixth place with a time of 26:54, while freshman Tripp Hurt finished eighth with a time of 26:56.  Sophomore Jack Klecker turned in a time of 27:38 for 22nd place, and sophomore James Perez rounded out the Furman scorers, placing 31st with a time of 28:14.

Furman will run at the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C. on Oct. 14.
