RALEIGH, N.C. -- Junior Sinead Haughey and freshman Tanner Hinkle set new Furman records in the 10,000m as the Paladin track and field teams opened the 2014 outdoor season Friday at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.
Haughey recorded a time of 35:09.37 to break the old record of 35:25.41, set by Jill Braley in 2001, by more than 16 seconds.
"It was really nice to see Sinead race to her ability level," said Furman coach Rita Gary following the race. "We had some bumps during the indoor season, but she's a great competitor, and she's come back around when it mattered. I'm excited for the rest of her outdoor season."
Hinkle's time of 29:38.11 broke the previous record of 29:54.50, set by David Branch in 1978, also by more than 16 seconds.
"Tanner did a great job of setting a very hard goal and then going out and grinding to that goal," said Paladin coach Chris Neal at the completion of the event. "It was a great race and his second school record of the year."
Three Furman freshmen set personal records at the meet. Maddie Wolfe posted a time of 4:51 in the 1,500m, while Anna McBride and Laura Miller recorded personal bests with times of 17:35.12 and 17:49.66, respectively, in the 5,000m.
Also at the meet, senior Catherine Burton crossed the line in 17:47.01 in the 5,000m, and junior McKenzie Woolley notched a time of 4:54.61 in the 1,500m. In the women's 100m, junior Rachel Gilbert posted a time of 13.03, and fellow junior Chrissy Reinemund completed the event with a time of 13.48.
In the field events, freshman Candler Herrin recorded a long jump of 5.99 (19-8).
