GREENVILLE, S.C. -- A record six athletes posted a sub-4:00 time in the Blue Shoes Elite Mile, which was held Saturday night in conjunction with the 17th annual Blue Shoes Invitational at the Irwin Belk Track Complex for Track and Field and Kelsey-West Track in Greenville, S.C.

Furman Elite's Michael Hammond won the Blue Shoes Elite Mile event, turning in a personal record of 3:57.70.  Hammond, a former All-American at Virginia Tech, is in his first year with Furman Elite.

"My training partner Jeff See did a good job of setting the pace for us tonight," said Hammond after the race.  "The pace was a little quick at first.  The third lap was a little slow, but we were able to pick it up in the last lap."

Jake Edwards, a former Ohio State runner who trained under Paladin head coach Robert Gary during his collegiate career, was second at 3:58.09, also a personal best.  Furman Elite's Jack Bolas placed third at 3:58.53, while Matt Elliot of Brooks crossed the line in 3:58.94 for fourth place.  N.C. State's Andrew Colley recorded a time of 3:59.34, then Joe Stillin of Zip Fitness rounded out the sub-4:00 performers at 3:59.75.

The Paladins picked up first-place finishes in three individual events at the meet, breaking meet records in all three events.  Junior Sinead Haughey set a new school and meet record in the 5,000m, winning the event in 16:57.99, to lead the Furman women's team.  Junior Tripp Hurt won the 3,000m Steeplechase, setting a new meet record of 9:07.24, while freshman Tanner Hinkle took first in the 5,000m with a meet record of 14:38.56.

Besides the three meet records set by the Paladins, nine additional meet records were broken at the event. The Georgia State women's team notched new records in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 100m high hurdles, 400m intermediate hurdles, and the shot put, while Brianna Heilsnis of Clayton broke the record in the hammer with a throw of 164-00.

On the men's side, Bryce Rauhof of Clayton State also set a new hammer record with a mark of 168-00, and Limestone's Tristan Perignon established a new record with a time of 1:51.64 in the 800m.

The Furman track and field teams will compete at the Southern Conference Championships April 26-27 in Spartanburg, S.C.
