GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's cross country team won the second annual Furman Cross Country Classic Saturday morning in Greenville, S.C., defeating highly ranked competition for the victory, while the Paladin women's team took second place behind Wake Forest.

The Paladin men scored 24 points for the win, beating second-place Auburn by 40 points.  All five of the Furman men's scorers finished in the top 10, including sophomore Tanner Hinkle, who claimed first place in the 8K race with a time of 24:17.78.  Sophomore Troy Reeder finished third with a time of 24:30.39, followed by Paladin rookie Frank Lara in fourth at 24:33.81.  Senior Tripp Hurt recorded a time of 24:46.27 to take seventh place, while freshman Aaron Templeton rounded out the Furman scorers in ninth place with a time of 24:48.33.

Furman's women tallied 56 points in the 6K race, just 11 points behind Wake Forest.  All five Paladin scorers were among the top 17 finishers, giving the Paladins the highest fifth position runner of any team in the field.  Sophomore Allie Buchalski led Furman with a fourth-place finish after recording a time of 21:27.68, while senior Sinead Haughey also placed among the top-10, clinching ninth place at 22:00.12.  Sophomore Julia Rodriguez turned in a time of 22:03.04 for 11th place, while sophomore Laura Miller placed 15th at 22:06.52.  Rookie Emma Mashburn completed the Paladin scorers, placing 17th with a time of 22:12.86.

"This has been a really terrific weekend which started with a great dinner last night with Furman President Elizabeth Davis, Paladin alumni, donors, and a lot of parents," said Furman head coach Robert Gary at the conclusion of the meet.  "I am particularly proud of our course, as we do a wonderful job with this meet from the beginning Blue Shoes Open race to the final JV race.  Obviously, the highlight of today is the very impressive win by the Furman men and the great showing by the Paladin women, especially without one of our top runners, Grace Tinkey, in the lineup.  This really excites us as we look ahead to our next event in Virginia."

Other Furman men's competitors included sophomore Brock Baker, who placed 11th with a time of 24:58.37, and sophomore Josh Brickell, who clocked a time of 25:25.31 for 18th place.  Senior William Ivey placed 26th at 25:45.55, while sophomore Matt Lange was 31st at 25:57.53.  Senior Jack Morgan finished in 44th place with a time of 26:21.12, and sophomore Lee Shearer placed 67th after turning in a time of 27:23.82.

For the Paladin women, sophomore Anna McBride finished 26th with a time of 22:41.04, and sophomore Maddie Wolfe was 30th after recording a time of 22:45.28.  Freshman Jacquelyn Crow turned in a time of 22:53.17 for 32nd place, and sophomore Bryce Seymour placed 29th at 23:12.22.  Sophomore Ann Sisson posted a time of 26:15.49 for 85th place.
