AMES, IOWA -- Junior Tanner Hinkle set a new Furman indoor track and field record in the 5,000m Friday at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.
Hinkle, a native of Mason, Mich., posted a time of 14:14.58 to finish fourth in the afternoon session and to place 31st overall in the event at the meet, one of the premier indoor track and field events in the country this weekend. Hinkle's time was almost three seconds better than the previous Paladin record of 14:17.35, set by Josh Brickell last season.
Paladin junior Laura Miller also competed in the women's 5,000m at the meet, turning in a personal-best time of 16:44.01 for 27th place, while sophomore Aaron Templeton placed 34th in the men's 5,000m after notching a time of 14:19.43.
"Tanner did a great job of showing up and competing today," said Furman assistant coach Chris Neal at the completion of Friday's competition. "He really wanted to get the school record, so I am happy that he is leaving Iowa with it. He is very fit, and this a great starting point for him."
The rest of the Paladin team is competing at the Music City Challenge in Nashville, Tenn., this weekend. Sophomore Emma Mashburn led the Paladin women after placing fifth with a time of 17:15.43 in the 5,000m, while junior Matt Lange paced the men after also finishing fifth in the 5,000m, crossing the line in 14:50.57.
The Music City Challenge will conclude on Saturday. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. with the 3,000m competition. The final event of the day, the 4x400m relay, is scheduled to commence at 5:05 p.m.
