TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Furman men's cross country team placed 11th and the Paladin women were 25th Saturday at the 2016 Pre-NCAA Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.  The meet, which featured numerous powerhouses that finished among the elite at the 2015 NCAA Championships, served as a precursor for this year's national championships.

Junior Frank Lara and senior Josh Brickell paced the Paladin men on the 8K course.  Lara placed 20th with a time of 24:24.1, followed by Brickell in 21st place at 24:24.4.  Sophomore Ryan Adams finished 61st with a time of 24:58.6, and rookie Jake Ogden clocked a time of 25:21.7 for 109th place.  Senior Matt Lange, who posted a time of 25:39.9, was 151st, and junior Quintin McKinnish placed 179th at 25:50.4  Freshman Mason Coppi completed the Paladin lineup, finishing 196th with a time of 25:57.1.

Freshman Savannah Carnahan led the Paladin women on the 6K course, posting a time of 20:30.2 for 16th place.  Rookie Gabrielle Jennings turned in a time of 21:19.5 to take 85th place, and freshman Emma Grace Hurley crossed the line in 21:52.2 to place 154th.  Freshman Grace Dwyer placed 201st at 22:12.7, while rookie Riley Burr finished 204th with a time of 22:13.9.  Rookie Jennifer Stephenson recorded a time of 22:37.0, taking 235th place, and senior Laura Miller placed 29th at 22:45.3.

‎"I was very encouraged by both teams' progress since the Griak Invitational," said Paladin head coach Robert Gary.  "We were very close to putting complete races together. We are short over the last 2 kilometers, but we will have that over the next 2-4 weeks as we prep for SoCon and NCAA Regional Championships.

"Savanah and Frank ran much more poised today than at Griak and really finished high, which is great.  The performance of the day probably is reserved for Josh Brickell.  He did a tremendous job with team tactics and then finishing things off.  It is great to be developing so many young runners in anticipation of next year returning our redshirting athletes, but we still have goals of defending our SoCon titles and qualifying for the NCAA Championships."

The Paladins, winners of the past three SoCon meets, will defend their league titles at the Southern Conference Championships on October 29 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
