Buchalski Wins 5,000m To Lead Furman At Virginia Challenge

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Senior Allie Buchalski won the women's 5,000m with a time of 15:39.17 to lead the Furman track and field teams Saturday at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va. 

Buchalski was one of nine Paladins who placed among the top 20 at the meet.  The Paladin women placed three runners among the top 20 in the 1,500m, including sophomore Savannah Carnahan, who finished third with a time of 4:20.40, and sophomore Gabrielle Jennings, who recorded a time of 4:24.84 for 16th place.  Senior Jacquelyn Crow was 20th at 4:26.27.

On the men's side, senior Josh Brickell placed seventh in the 10,000m with a time of 29:39.82, and senior Tanner Hinkle finished ninth in the event at 29:59.34.  Sophomore Jake Odgen turned in a time of 3:45.82 for 11th place in the 1,500m, and senior Troy Reeder placed 12th in the 5,000m at 14:01.46.  Senior Aaron Templeton crossed the line in 14:03.74 in the 5,000m, recording a 16th place finish.

The Paladins notched 17 top-20 finishes at the USC Open in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday.  Senior Becca Cooley and freshman Emily Lane went 1-2 in the women's 1,500m.  Cooley won the event in 4:42.54, followed by Lane, who crossed the line in 4:46.70.  Freshman Reilly Caldwell placed second in the women's 3,000m with a time of 10:05.20.  In the 800m, Cooley finished fifth with a time of 2:17.70, and Lane was 13th at 2:31.01.

In the women's javelin, sophomore Reagan Chewning recorded a mark of 35.05 (115-0) for eighth place, and senior Shannon Smith placed 12th with a mark of 32.68 (107-2).

Sophomore Luke Meade led the men's team, placing second in the 3,000m at 8:17.72.  Rookie Allen Clark was sixth in the event with a time of 9:05.12, and junior Patrick McNamara placed ninth with a time of 9:15.18.  In the 800m, sophomore Madison Daniel led the Paladins with a seventh place finish (1:56.57), and sophomore Thomas Moore finished 11th at 1:57.56.  Senior Hayden Cox recorded a 20th-place finish with a time of 1:59.75.

Junior Jaylan Reid led Furman in the field events, finishing fifth with a distance of 15.49 (50-10) in the shot put.  In the long jump, junior Chad Word placed 10th at 6.21 (20-4.25), while senior Austin Chewning was 12th at 5.83 (19-1.5).  Sophomore Nate Kyei-Donkar finished 13th at 5.76 (18-10.75).

The Paladins will compete at the Southern Conference Championships in Cullowhee, N.C., May 10-11.
