GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman track and field teams will open the 2019 outdoor season Friday at the Raleigh Relays on the campus of N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C. and will also compete at the Terrier Relays, which will be hosted by Wofford at Spartanburg High on Saturday.
Friday's events in Raleigh will begin with the 5,000m starting at 9:00 a.m. and conclude with the 10,000m at 10:43 p.m. Events will continue on Saturday at the Raleigh Relays, with the Paladins competing in the women's javelin at 10:30 a.m. and the women's 800m at 2:00 p.m.
Saturday's events in Spartanburg are slated to begin at 10 a.m. with the 10,000m. The final event, the women's 4x400m, is scheduled for 4:55 p.m. on Saturday.
Eleven Furman distance athletes in six events, the most in program history, competed at last season's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships East Preliminaries. Eight of the eleven return this season, including senior Aaron Templeton and junior Mason Coppi, who ran in the 5,000m, and senior Frank Lara, who competed in the men's 10,000m. Junior Jake Ogden also qualified in the 1,500m in 2018. Lara led the Paladin men at the NCAA Championships, placing 15th in the 10,000m to earn second team All-America honors.
On the women's side, juniors Savannah Carnahan returns after competing in the 5,000m, while junior Emma Grace Hurley and Gabrielle Jennings, plus sophomore Krissy Gear, return in the 3,000m Steeplechase. Carnahan, who garnered second team All-America accolades, placed 15th in the 5,000m, while Jennings and Gear earned honorable mention All-America citations after placing 20th and 24th, respectively, in the Steeplechase.
