RALEIGH, N.C. -- Junior Savannah Carnahan and senior Aaron Templeton shattered the Paladin records in the 10,000m to lead the Furman track and field teams in the 2019 outdoor season opener Friday at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.

A native of Cumming, Ga., Carnahan recorded a time of 33:35.11 in the women's invitational event, breaking the former record of 33:53.34, set by Sinead Haughey in 2015, by more than 18 seconds.  She placed second, tallying the second-best time in both the NCAA and the United States this season, and qualifying for the NCAA East Preliminary Championship, which will be held Mary 23-35 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Templeton, who hails from Knoxville, Tenn., crossed the line in 28:27.85 for the win on the men's invitational side, knocking 48 seconds off the previous record of 29:15.99, set by Tanner Hinkle in 2017.  He leads the NCAA and the United States in the event and will also reach the NCAA East Preliminaries, along with senior Frank Lara who finished seventh in the invitational event with a time of 28:47.89, and sophomore Daniel Bernal, who recorded a time of 29:40.25 for 29th place in the invitational 10,000m.

Junior Gabbi Jennings won the 3,000m Steeplechase with sophomore Krissy Gear following in second place.  Jennings, who established a new meet record at 9:59.54, leads the NCAA in the event, while Gear is second in the nation after crossing the line in 10:10.86.  Both earned qualifying times for the NCAA East Preliminary Round.

On the men's side, junior Jake Ogden finished ninth with a time of 3:46.07 in the 1,500m, and rookie Cameron Ponder made his 3,000m Steeplechase debut, finishing 21st with a time of 9:09.82.  In section one of the men's 10,000m, junior Mason Coppi recorded a personal-best time of 29:43.17 for fourth place, and sophomore Trenton Mandato finished 32nd with a time of 30:43.60.
