WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest swept Furman in baseball doubleheader action Sunday at Couch Ballpark, winning game one, 5-1, and recording an 11-2 shutout in game two.

The twinbill sweep completed a three-game series sweep for the Deacons (8-4) while the loss was the fourth straight for the Paladins (2-7).

Wake Forest pitching dominated both contests, surrendering only eight total hits while recording 25 strikeouts.

In the opener Wake Forest starting pitcher Jared Shuster struck out five of the first six Paladins he faced and fanned 12 over seven frames.  He got all the offense he would need in the fourth when Patrick Frick roped a two-out double and Brendan Tinsman followed with a two-run home run to left field.

The Deacons stretched the lead to 5-0 in the seventh on Bobby Seymour's three-run double.

Shuster (3-0) allowed only one hit — a third inning single to David Webel — over seven innings while striking out 12 and walking three.

Furman avoided the shutout in the ninth after Sterling Turmon singled with two outs and scored on a Jared Mihalik double.

The loss was charged to Matt Lazzaro (0-1), who pitched effectively over six innings, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out four.

In game two Morgan McSweeney (2-1) hurled six innings of shutout ball, striking out five, and Chris Lanzilli's three-run, third inning home run powered Wake Forest to the 11-2 victory.

The Deacons roughed up Paladin starting and losing pitcher David Dunlavey (1-2) for nine hits and seven runs over four innings to take control of the contest.

Like in game one Furman escaped being shut out by plating two runs in the ninth on an MJ Sasapan two-run double.

Wake Forest finished with 14 hits.
