BIRMINGHAM, ALA. -- Sonny DiChiara homered twice, drove in four runs, and scored twice to headline a powerful offensive attack that propelled Samford to 14-4 Southern Conference victory over Furman in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

The win secures the series for Samford (16-6, 2-0 SoCon), and the loss was the sixth straight for Furman (5-15, 0-2 SoCon).  The two teams wrap up the series with a 2:00 p.m. Sunday contest.

After Furman grabbed a 3-0 first inning lead on the strength of Sterling Turmon's two-run home run, Samford answered with five runs in their first turn at the plate, highlighted by DiChiara's first of two clouts, a three-run blast to left field.

The Bulldogs scored three more in both the second and third innings, with Braden Fryman's two-run home run in the third chasing Furman starting pitcher Rob Hughes (2-1), who was charged with the loss after yielding 10 runs, nine of which were earned, on nine hits and five walks.

Samford's scoring parade continued with a run in the fourth and two in a fifth inning that featured DiChiara's second home run of the game and third round tripper of the series.

The Bulldogs' potent attack, which generated 15 hits, including three home runs and eight for extra bases, provided plenty of support for starting pitcher Jesse McCord (2-1), who allowed only three hits and three runs, one earned, over seven innings.

Furman had two hits in its three-run first inning but only two thereafter, one of which was a Jared Mihalik home run to lead off the fifth inning.

Jordan Fucci went 4-for-5 with three doubles and scored three runs for Samford.
