Eight Paladins Earn All-SoCon Honors

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Eight Furman Paladins have been recognized as football All-Southern Conference performers, the league announced today with the release of the annual coaches and media teams.

The eight Paladins include three first team selections, three second team picks, and two SoCon All-Freshman team choices.

Senior defensive end Gary Wilkins, junior linebacker Cory Magwood, and junior offensive guard Joe Turner led the way by earning first team recognition.  Furman's second team honorees include junior cornerback Reggie Thomas, junior wide receiver Jordan Snellings, and sophomore tight end Duncan Fletcher.

Quarterback P.J. Blazejowski garnered SoCon All-Freshman Team laurels along with placekicker/punter Jon Croft Hollingsworth.

Wilkins, a repeat consensus first team choice, totaled 77 tackles, including 17.5 for-loss, and a team leading eight sacks this fall.  The 6-3, 243-pound Covington, Ga., product also recorded three forced fumbles and an interception that he returned 19 yards for a touchdown in Furman's 25-20 road win over Mercer.  He completed a solid 48-game, 41-start Paladin career with 294 tackles, including 36 for-loss, and 15.5 sacks, good for fifth all-time in Furman history.  He also scored three touchdowns, among which was a 98-yard interception return for a score in a 27-10 victory over Appalachian State in 2013.

Magwood led the SoCon in tackles in 2014 with 123 tackles in 11 games, missing only the Paladins' season finale against Chattanooga due to an ankle sprain.  The 6-2, 228-pound Varnville, S.C., native's tackle tally ranked sixth among Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) defenders in 2014.

Turner was Furman's lone offensive representative on the coaches' first team.  A native of Roswell, Ga., the 6-3, 275-pound right guard was the only Paladin offensive lineman to start in all 12 games this fall and now counts 34 starts and over 2,100 play participations in his career.

Thomas concluded his third season as a starter with 48 tackles, a team leading nine pass deflections, and an interception.  The 6-foot, 180-pound product of Abbeville, S.C., also posted a sack and forced fumble against South Carolina.

Snellings notched a solid 2014 season with a team leading 50 receptions for 727 yards and four touchdowns.  The 6-2, 190-pound Atlanta, Ga., native recorded four 100-yard receiving games and had a pair of season best eight-reception performances versus Gardner-Webb and The Citadel.  His 99 career receptions rank 13th on Furman's career chart.

Making the switch from quarterback as a true freshman to tight end, Fletcher, a 6-4, 222-pounder from Columbus, Ga., collected 36 receptions for 442 yards and two touchdowns for the Paladins in 2014, including a season best eight-reception, 98-yard performance versus South Carolina State.

Furman's two SoCon All-Freshman Team honorees fashioned impact seasons.

P.J. Blazejowski, a St. Augustine, Fla., native, entered preseason camp as the Paladins' third team quarterback but by mid-season had moved into the starting lineup.  Over the final eight games, seven of which he started, the true freshman signal caller passed for 1,376 yards and nine touchdowns and rushed for 363 yards and four scores, earning SoCon Freshman of the Week honors three times.  His finest outing came in a 31-14 win over Wofford on Nov. 15 when he completed a Furman record 15 consecutive passes (15-for-15) for 305 yards and two touchdowns while also running for a score.  That performance netted him Sports Network National Freshman of the Week recognition.

Jon Croft Hollingsworth stepped into two key roles in 2014 as the squad's placekicker and punter.  As a kicker he converted 9-of-17 field goal attempts, including 5-for-8 from 40 yards and beyond and season best 51-yard effort versus Western Carolina.  He claimed Sports Network National Freshman of the Week honors after booting four field goals, including a 50-yarder, in the win over Mercer.  The Greenwood, S.C., native averaged 61.4 yards on kickoffs, with 15 of his 45 kicks going for touchbacks, and also averaged 39.6 yards on 64 punts in his first season as a Paladin.
