Samford Slides Past Furman, 5-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team slid by Furman, 5-2, Friday at the Samford Tennis Center in Birmingham, Ala. 

The Bulldogs swept the doubles to open the match.  Zac Dunkle and Alexander Sanjonz combined for an 8-4 win over sophomores Alex Christ and Joel Cook in the top match, and Elliot Barnwell and Ryan Shidler defeated freshman Jacob Behal and junior Andrew Mellow, 8-4, at number two.  In the number three match, Fernando Costa and Carson Kadi scored an 8-4 victory over senior Watson George and sophomore Nate Collins.

Samford's Dunkle defeated Mellow, 6-3, 7-5, in the top singles match, and Kadi beat Chris, 6-4, 6-3, at number two.  In the third singles contest, Barnwell topped Behal, 6-3, 6-4.  Cook put the Paladins on the board with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win over Costa in the fourth-seeded match, then Sanjonz defeated junior Robbie Aru, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2) at number five.  Junior Tyler Droll added to the Furman total at number six, picking up a 7-6(10-8), 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) win over Shidler.

Furman (3-10) continues the 2012 SoCon season Sunday at Chattanooga at 1 p.m.
