GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's tennis team will entertain UNC Asheville Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center. The match marks the ninth meeting between the two schools. The teams last met in 2010, when the Paladins scored a 5-0 victory to take an 8-0 lead in the series.
The Paladins (6-6, 1-1 SoCon) picked up their first league win of the 2012 season with a 5-2 win at Chattanooga on Sunday. Furman won the doubles point then collected singles wins from #1 Andrew Mellow, #2 Alex Christ, #3 Joel Cook, and #5 Robbie Aru.
UNC Asheville (6-6) dropped a 4-3 match to Tennessee Tech in Asheville on Saturday. Matt Waissen, Jonas Brobeck, and Thomas Rees picked up singles victories for the Bulldogs in the contest.
Furman is led by junior Andrew Mellow, who is ranked 110th nationally among all singles players in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. Mellow, a native of St. Louis, Mo., holds a 6-7 record at number one singles. He was named the SoCon Men's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played February 27 through March 4, after defeating Georgia's Wil Spencer, ranked No. 3 in the nation 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7). Earlier this season he fashioned a four-match winning streak at number one singles.
