Greenville, S.C. – The Furman women's lacrosse team has been tabbed as the 2019 Southern Conference favorite in the preseason lacrosse poll conducted by the league's head coaches, it was announced today by the SoCon office.
Furman earned a total of 21 points in the preseason poll, receiving three first-place votes. Detroit Mercy came in just behind the Paladins with two first-place votes and 20 total points. Central Michigan is slated to finish third with a total of 18 points. Mercer was slotted fourth with 17 points and a first-place vote. Wofford and Delaware State rounded out the poll with seven points each.
The coaches also selected a preseason all-conference team, consisting of 12 players. Furman senior attacker Abby Shields was named preseason All-SoCon after a junior campaign that included 35 goals and 24 assists. Shields scored eight goals, including a game-winner, while adding five assists against league competition in 2018. Paladin junior Morgan Franklin made the preseason squad at defender, after winning 55 draws and picking up 25 ground balls as a sophomore.
Central Michigan led the way with five preseason picks, while Detroit Mercy and Mercer added three and two, respectively.
The Paladins begin their fifth season of competition on February 9, welcoming High Point to Paladin Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
