Cullowhee, N.C. -- Freshman Isabella Gutierrez scored in the 27th minute and junior Kellsey Weaver notched seven saves to lead Furman to a 1-0 victory over Western Carolina in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship Saturday evening at the Catamount Soccer Complex.

With their fifth straight victory, the No. 5 seed Paladins (11-6) advance to face No. 1 seed Samford in the semifinal round at 4 p.m. on Friday, November 2, in Macon, Ga. The Catamounts finish their season at 8-8-2.

"Western Carolina is always a tough place to win, but Kellsey made some big saves to keep us in the match early and we were able to score a nice goal," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "There's no doubt we're excited to be playing into November and we will be prepared for next Friday."

After receiving a throw-in deep on the right wing, freshman Erin Houlihan lofted a cross through the box and Gutierrez headed her shot back across the face of goal to beat WCU goalkeeper Jacquelyn Gnassi for the only goal of the night at 26:55. The score marked the fourth of the season for Gutierrez and fifth assist of the campaign for Houlihan.

The go-ahead goal came after Weaver made three saves in the first 12 minutes of the match, including a pair of point-blank stops to keep the match scoreless. Weaver finished with eight saves to record her fourth solo shutout of the year, while Gnassi totaled four saves for the Catamounts.

Furman's victory avenged a 2-0 loss to the Catamounts in last season's SoCon semifinals and a 3-1 defeat in Cullowhee earlier this season.

Western Carolina compiled a 15-8 advantage in total shots and held an 8-5 edge in shots on goal in the rematch.
