Softball Blanks Western Carolina To Complete Series Sweep, 7-0

Greenville, S.C. -- Senior Lindsey Bert tossed Furman's third consecutive shutout and AnnaRose Borrelli and Bert each belted a home run to power Furman to a 7-0 victory and three-game Southern Conference series sweep of Western Carolina on Sunday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.

The shutout improved the Paladins to 34-11 overall and 6-4 in the SoCon, while the Catamounts fell to 14-29 overall and 1-11 in league play. Furman extended its home winning streak to 14 games and upped its record at Pepsi Stadium this season to 25-2.

Bert (21-8), a left-hander from Tallahassee, Fla., scattered two hits to notch her second shutout of the weekend and 10th in 29 starts this season. She fanned 14 batters and allowed just two walks on the afternoon.

Borrelli put Furman in front with her team-leading 11th home run of the season and school record 32nd of her career to leadoff the bottom half of the second inning. After Casey Bigham reached on an error to start the bottom of the fourth, Bert lined a two-run shot to the opposite field to up the lead to 3-0. Two more Catamount error helped Furman add two more runs in the frame to push the lead to 5-0.

Marissa Guimbarda doubled in the fifth to drive home Bigham with the sixth run and Hannah Reynolds delivered a sacrifice fly later in the inning to score pinch runner Caroline Nageotte with the Paladins' seventh tally.

Starter Kayla Brewer (0-1) took the loss for Western Carolina after allowing five runs on five hits in four innings of work.

Bigham scored two runs on the day for Furman, while Bert drove in two. Guimbarda finished 1-for-2 with a double and a base on balls.

The Paladins continue their homestand next weekend when they host Samford in a three-game series at Pepsi Stadium.
