Clearwater, Fla. -- Sophomore Marissa Guimbarda collected four hits, including a three-run homer, to drive Furman to a 7-4 win over Incarnate Word on Saturday at the USF-Clearwater Parks & Recreation Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. The Paladins dropped the second game of the day versus Ball State, 8-2.

Tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Furman plated five runs to take control. Amanda Fleming reached on an error and gave Furman the lead when Tess Griswold followed with a double. Casey Bigham singled and the Paladins stretched the lead to 4-2 when pinch runner Roni Payne scored after the catcher's throw sailed into center field on attempt to throw out Bigham stealing second base. Lauren Duggar followed with a base on ball before Guimbarda cracked a three-run homer to center field, her fifth roundtripper in the last five games.

Senior Emily DeMonte (4-6) held the Cardinals to three earned runs on six hits over six innings to secure the win and freshman Mackense Greico sat down UIW in order in the seventh inning to notch her first career save.

Guimbarda finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs to propel Furman's 11-hit attack and Duggar chipped in with a triple, walk and two runs.

Brett Coleman (0-5) suffered the loss for the Cardinals allowing seven runs on eight hits in three and one-third innings in the circle.

In the second game of the day, Ball State erupted for six runs in the bottom of the third inning to erase a 2-1 Paladin lead and claim an 8-2 decision.

After back-to-back walks started the third inning, Kennedy Wynn laced a two-run double into the gap to drive in two runs and Kendall Fields followed with an RBI single. Two batters later, Mackenzie McCarty hammered a three-run homer to right field to put Ball State in front, 7-2.

Furman had grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top half of the inning on Bigham's two-run single after Ball State had taken an early 1-0 lead.

Greico (0-5) took the loss for Furman allowing eight runs over three and one-third innings of work. Darcy Huber (2-1) secured the victory for Ball State working four and two-third innings and allowing just two runs on five hits. She struck out five batters and did not issue a walk.
