GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team will host the 24th annual Furman Fall Classic tennis tournament this weekend at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C. The tournament will feature eight teams, in a flighted competition (i.e. no team winner, just individual flight champions for singles and doubles).
Seven teams competing in the tournament were ranked in the top 25 in the 2010 final ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings: North Carolina (3rd), Northwestern (7th), Clemson (11th), Tennessee (13th), Florida State (14th), South Carolina (19th), and Vanderbilt (27th). The eight-team field also includes 12 singles players and five doubles teams ranked in the preseason ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings.
Doubles play will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, followed by singles action at 1 p.m. Play will continue on Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m. each day.
Furman returns seven players from last season's team that posted a 16-8 overall record and an 8-2 mark in Southern Conference play. Head coach Debbie Southern, who is entering her 27th season with the Paladins, guided the team to a berth in the championship match of the league tournament for the seventh consecutive season.
Senior Monica Arguello was named to the All-Southern Conference first team for singles for the third consecutive season in 2009. She teamed sophomore Lauren Kline for the second-team No. 1 position in doubles. Kline was also chosen to the all-freshman team last season.
