ELON, N.C. – With the team score tied at 3-3, down one match to none in doubles, the third-seeded Furman women's team rallied back on Wednesday, defeating sixth-seeded Chattanooga, 4-3, in a thrilling quarterfinal match at the Southern Conference Tournament at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C.

Due to the threat of inclement weather, the match began with singles play instead of doubles.  Following the singles tie, Kayla Jones and Katie Polk recorded an 8-3 win over sophomore Kelly Sullivan and junior Margaret Boyette at flight three, leaving the Mocs just one doubles victory shy of the win.

The teams battled back and forth at flights one and two doubles, eventually settling in at 7-7 in both matches.  Senior Lauren Kline and sophomore Alex Moreno-Kaste pushed the tie to 8-8 at flight one and headed to a tiebreaker versus Alexa Flynn and Kelsey Coots.  Meanwhile, at flight two, senior Michele Stanford and junior Amanda Murray won consecutive games to defeat Jenna Nurik and Kaylene Chadwell, 9-7.  In the decisive flight one match, the Paladins came through for the victory in the tiebreaker, 7-5.

"We pulled out a close match against a very good Chattanooga team," said Furman head coach Debbie Southern following the victory.  "Our team did a great job of weathering the ups and downs in each match and keeping a steady focus on the next point.  We look forward to having another shot at Elon tomorrow."

In singles action, Sullivan collected a quick 6-3, 6-2 win over Polk at flight six to put the Paladins on the board, but Coots evened the score after posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory versus Murray at number five.  Jones pushed the Mocs ahead, 2-1, after defeating junior Katherine Oudin, 7-5, 7-5, at flight three.

Stanford knotted the score at two-apiece, coming from behind to defeat Flynn, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, at number four, then Nurik swung the momentum toward Chattanooga with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 advantage versus Kline in the top singles match-up.  Moreno-Kaste tied the match at 3-all after beating Chadwell, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0, at number two, to force the doubles point.

Furman (14-8, 8-2 SoCon) will face second-seeded Elon Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.  Chattanooga concludes the 2013 season with an 18-5 mark.
