ELON, N.C. – Furman opened the Southern Conference season Friday with a 4-3 victory over defending league champion Elon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C.  With the win, the Paladins handed the Phoenix its first SoCon loss of the season.

Elon's Bryn Khoury and Taylor Casey topped senior Margaret Boyette and freshman Karlee Bryce, 8-2, at flight three doubles, before the Paladins put together wins in the top two doubles contests to capture the opening point.  Junior Alex Moreno-Kaste and senior Katherine Oudin defeated Jordan Johnston and Barbora Lazarova, 8-5, at flight one, before freshmen Blair Matrin and Ansley Speaks teamed up for an 8-5 advantage over Frida Jansaker and Maria Camara Ruiz at number two to clinch the point.

The Phoenix tied the match at 1-1 after Jansaker posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Moreno-Kaste at flight two singles, before the Paladins reeled off three-straight points at flights three through five to seal the team victory.  Oudin defeated Lazarova, 6-3, 6-4, at number three, and Bryde beat Khoury, 6-2, 6-3, at flight four.  Junior Kelly Sullivan won a tough-fought battle at flight five to clinch the win, holding off Casey, 6-1, 7-6(1).

Elon won the final two singles matches of the day, as Johnston defeated Speaks, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2, at number one, then Camara Ruiz held off Martin, 1-6, 7-6, 1-0 at flight six.

"Today we maintained really good focus on the court," said Furman head coach Debbie Southern following the victory.  "Winning the doubles point gave us good momentum going into singles play.  This win was a total team effort.  Every team in the Southern Conference is good, so I think we will see a lot of 4-3 matches this season.  Winning on the road is difficult, and I'm proud of how our team fought today."

Furman (8-5, 1-0 SoCon) continues league play at UNC Greensboro tomorrow at noon.  The Paladins conclude their six-match road swing at Western Carolina on March 25 before returning home to face Appalachian State at the Mickel Tennis Center on March 26.
