GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The 28th annual Furman Fall Classic women's tennis tournament will be held this weekend at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C. The tournament will feature eight teams, in a flighted competition (i.e. no team winner, just individual flight champions for singles and doubles).
Six teams competing in the tournament were ranked in the top 34 in the 2013 final ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings: Alabama (6th), Vanderbilt (11th), Clemson (13th), South Carolina (26th), Florida State (31st), and Tennessee (34th). The eight-team field also includes 18 singles players and nine doubles teams ranked in the preseason ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings.
Doubles play will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, followed by singles action at 1 p.m. Play will continue on Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m. each day.
Furman returns four players from last season's team that posted a 17-6 overall record and an perfect 9-0 mark in Southern Conference play. Head coach Debbie Southern, who is entering her 31st season with the Paladins, was chosen the 2014 Southern Conference Coach of the Year after guiding the team to the regular season league championship.
Ansley Speaks, the 2014 Furman Female Athlete of the Year, returns after being named the SoCon Freshman of the Year and Player of the year last season. Alex Moreno-Kaste and Blair Martin joined Speaks on the all-conference team, while Speaks, Martin, and Karlee Bryde were named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team.
