GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Sophomore Ansley Speaks picked up both a singles and doubles win to lead the Furman women's tennis team Friday in the first day of the 28th Annual Furman Fall Classic, being held this weekend at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
Speaks teamed with senior Alex Moreno-Kaste to beat Shelby Talcott and Annette Dohanics of South Carolina, 8-5, in the second round of the flight one doubles draw in the morning then returned to the court for singles in the afternoon, besting 90th-ranked Luicelena Perez of Alabama, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in the top singles draw.
Freshman Harper Caswell also earned a singles victory, topping Ali Mills of South Carolina, 6-0, 6-2, in the flight six draw.
The Furman Fall Classic features six teams ranked in the top 34 in the 2013 final ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings: Alabama (6th), Vanderbilt (11th), Clemson (13th), South Carolina (26th), Florida State (31st), and Tennessee (34th). The eight-team field also includes 18 singles players and nine doubles teams ranked in the preseason ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings.
On Saturday doubles play will begin at 9 a.m, followed by singles play beginning at 10:30 a.m.
