Winthrop Slips Past Furman, 4-3

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Alice Garcia held on for a 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 win over senior Alex Moreno-Kaste at flight two to break open a 3-3 tie as Winthrop slipped past Furman, 4-3, at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Center in Rock Hill, S.C. on Sunday.

The Eagles won two of three doubles matches to claim the opening doubles point.  Garcia teamed with Mariana Humberg to down Moreno-Kaste and sophomore Ansley Speaks, 8-4, at flight one, and Tijana Uzelac and Ekin Gunaysu beat sophomore Blair Martin and freshman Alejandra Gil, 8-6, at number two.  The Paladins were victorious at flight three, as sophomore Karlee Bryde and rookie Harper Caswell defeated Camille Amraini and Monica Aguado, 8-0.

Furman picked up three singles wins, as Speaks downed Gunaysu, 6-1, 6-4, in the top-flighted match-up, and Caswell recorded a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Aguado at flight five.  Gil topped Amrani, 6-1, 6-2 at flight six.

Winthrop added singles wins at flights three and four to set up the decisive flight two match, as Humberg tallied a 6-1, 6-3 advantage over margin at number three, and Uzelac bested Bryde, 6-3, 6-0, at flight four.

The Paladins (4-10) will open the Southern Conference season at Samford Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
