ETSU Downs Furman, 5-2

GREENVILLE, S.C. – East Tennessee State downed Furman, 5-2, Sunday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. 

The Buccaneers won two of three doubles matches to capture the opening point.  Melissa Esguerra and Ioanna Markesini teamed up for an 8-2 win over sophomore Karlee Bryde and freshman Joan van Lochem at flight three, before Paladin sophomore Ansley Speaks and senior Alex Moreno-Kaste posted an 8-4 advantage versus Lyn Yee Choo and Ana Gerbasi in the top-flighted contest.  In the decisive flight two match, Jessica Brumit and Regina Nychytailova beat sophomore Blair Martin and rookie Alejandra Gil, 8-5.

ETSU won four singles matches for the team win.  Yee Choo topped Speaks, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4), at number one, and Markesini defeated Bryde, 6-1, 6-4, at flight four.  In the flight five match-up, Brumit posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Gil, and Esguerra bested van Lochem, 6-2, 6-1, at number six.

The Paladins picked up two singles wins, as Moreno-Kaste defeated Cychytailova, 6-3, 6-2, at flight two, and Martin beat Gerbasi, 7-6(4), 6-4, at number three.

Furman (7-13, 3-3 SoCon) will entertain UNCG on April 18 at 1 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center in the team's final home match of the regular season.
