GREENVILLE, S.C. – With the score tied at 3-all, senior Alex Moren-Kaste downed Kayla Gammer, 7-6(5), 7-5 in the top-flighted singles match to lead Furman past UNCG, 4-3,  to conclude the regular season Saturday in the Paladins' Senior Day match at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

The Spartans won two of three doubles matches to clinch the opening point.  Blaine Boaz and Stephanie Falcon beat sophomore Blair Martin and freshman Alejandra Gil, 8-6, at flight two, while Soumeya Anane and Masey DeMoss recorded an 8-4 advantage versus sophomore Karlee Bryde and rookie Harper Caswell at number three.  The Paladins picked up the win in the top-flighted match-up, as Moreno-Kaste teamed with sophomore Ansley Speaks for an 8-4 victory over Kayla Gammie and Corinee Blythe.

Bryde put the Paladins on the board with a quick 6-2, 6-3 win over Blythe at flight four singles, and Martin beat Amy Ellis, 6-3, 6-4, at number three to give Furman a 2-1 advantage.  UNGC quickly knotted the score at 2-all as DeMoss topped Gil, 6-2, 6-2, at flight six, but Speaks bested Falcon, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, at flight two to put the Paladins back on top, 3-2.  In the flight five contest, Jamie Grinberg held on to record a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Caswell to tie the match and set up the decisive flight one match.

"We pulled out a hard-fought win today having to take four of six singles matches," said Furman head coach Debbie Southern, who is in her 31st year at the helm of the Paladin program.  "Alex had quite a battle to clinch the win, which was a good way to end our Senior Day match."

Furman (8-13, 4-3 SoCon) will serve as host of the Southern Conference Tournament beginning April 24 at the Mickel Tennis Center.  The No. 4 Paladins are slated to face No. 5 UNCG Friday at 9 a.m. in first-round action.  Furman leads the league with 16 Southern Conference Tournament championship, including the Paladins' most recent win in 2008.
