GREENVILLE, S.C. – With the score tied at 3-all, sophomore Ansley Speaks topped Stephanie Falcon, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, at flight two singles to lead No. 4 Furman past No. 5 UNCG, 4-3,  Friday in the opening round of the 2015 Southern Conference Championships at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

The Paladins won two doubles matches to clinch the opening point.  Senior Alex Moreno-Kaste teamed with sophomore Ansley Speaks for an 8-4 win over Kayla Gammie and Corrine Blythe at flight one, and sophomore Karlee Bryde and freshman Harper Caswell downed Soumeya Anane and Masey DeMoss, 8-6, at number three.  The flight two match was unfinished.

In singles play, Blythe posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Caswell at flight five to tie the match at 1-all, but the Paladins picked up the next two singles points to take a 3-1 advantage.  Bryde beat Amy Ellis, 6-2, 6-3, at number four, then Moreno-Kaste downed Gammie, 6-1, 6-4, in the top-flighted matchup.  The Spartans' cut the deficit to 3-2 as Anane downed Martin, 7-5, 6-2, at flight three, then Jamie Grinberg came from behind for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Gil at number six to tie the match and set up the decisive match at flight two.

"I was proud of the team for winning the doubles point today, especially since we did not win the doubles point against UNCG last Saturday," said Furman head coach Debbie Southern, who is in her 31st year at the helm of the Paladin program.  "Greensboro played really well, and it came down to the last match.  Ansley changed her game plan in the middle of the third set, which made the difference in her winning her match.  We also had great singles play from Alex and Karlee today to win their matches."

Furman (9-13, 4-3 SoCon) will face No. 1 Samford Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Championships.  Due to predicted inclement weather in the Greenville area, the match time has been moved earlier and the match will be played indoors if needed.
