GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Junior Karlee Bryde and sophomore Harper Caswell placed second in the flight three doubles draw to lead the Furman women's tennis team Friday in the first day of the 29th Annual Furman Fall Classic, being held this weekend at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
Bryde and Caswell earned an opening round bye then downed Clemson's Theresa Piontek and Ally Miller-Krasilnikov, 8-7(13), to earn a spot in the championship match. The Paladin duo fell to Florida State's Lana Rush and Yang Pang, 8-5, to take second place in the draw.
Also in flight three competition, Furman junior Blair Martin teamed with Natalia Maynetto of Alabama to defeat Iowa's Carin Runefelt and Aimee Tarun, 8-4 in round one.
Six teams competing in this weekend's tournament were ranked in the top 61 in the 2014 final ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings: Vanderbilt (1), Alabama (14), Clemson (18), South Carolina (29), Florida State (39), and Tennessee (61). The eight-team field also includes 12 singles players and five doubles teams ranked in the preseason ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings.
On Saturday singles play will begin at 9 a.m.
